What happened at Cape Tainaron?

Heracles captured Cerberus—the three-headed guard dog of the Underworld—at Cape Tainaron, and according to the oldest sources, this cape in southern Greece actually *was* an entrance to Hades itself.

The Primary Source Account

Pausanias, writing in the 2nd century CE, visited Cape Tainaron and recorded what the locals told him. He describes a cave there and says that Heracles descended through it to reach Cerberus. Pausanias isn't inventing mythology—he's documenting what Greeks believed about a real geographical location. He even notes the sanctuary of Hades and Persephone that existed at the cape, suggesting this was an active religious site tied to Underworld mythology.

The task was specific: bring Cerberus back *alive* and *unharmed*. Heracles couldn't kill the beast. He had to wrestle it, subdue it, and drag it to the surface. Once he showed it to Eurystheus (who lost his nerve completely), he returned Cerberus to the Underworld. The dog went back to guarding the gates.

What Most People Get Wrong

Most modern retellings treat Cape Tainaron as just a poetic location—a vague "somewhere in the Underworld" kind of place. The misconception comes from later Hellenistic and Roman writers who abstracted the myth away from geography. But Pausanias—our oldest detailed source on this—treats it as a real place with real religious significance. Greeks didn't separate mythology from geography the way we do. Cape Tainaron *was* the Underworld entrance in their minds because it was a named location they could visit.

Also: people sometimes confuse this labor with others. Cerberus ≠ the Nemean Lion. Cape Tainaron ≠ generic Underworld. This is the *twelfth* labor, the finale, and it's geographically specific.
